Finally. Fun at home

A few of my surfing friends have been complaining for some time that I bring bad waves with me whenever I come and visit home.

Well finally, after years of complaining, some of my South Aussie friends and I finally got some good waves.

We went to the Port Willunga region late yesterday and surfed two reef breaks together.

One of the best parts of it all was that we didn't have to share our waves with anybody.

That, and the fact that I got some good quality water time: over three hours worth.

Cheering!

Some remote surfing

Hi readers.

If you're regular Cuttie in Your Face visitors, you'll know I'm a sucker for remote, uncrowded surfing.

Today I'm posting a clip from what I believe to be north of the US border on the Pacific Ocean

Pacific Ocean satellite photo (the US is obscured by the annoying white box)

Of course I could be wrong, but here's the clip anyway:

A few photos to tie you over

Sorry: I've been pretty busy over the festive season so I don't have much time to write more.

I hope you don't mind more photos for the time being?

Wax on... now wax off!

Wow! Today's post is one marathon clip - it's almost nine minutes long!

Anyway, over the past month or so, I've shown you ways of making your own surf wax at home. Well, what goes on, sometimes must come off.

When you're travelling, taking your board in for repair, or selling it for example, it's probably best to take the wax off it first.

There are many ways of doing this, and today's clip gives you one approach.

Surf art

I thought I'd go all arty-farty on you today.

Being an art lover in general, I also love surf art. Not all mind you - I find surf art quite hit and miss for me.

Today, for something different, I hopped on line and had a sniff around. Here are five of the better images I found:

This one's okay.

A bloke called Buttons

Following Chris' clip yesterday, I'm posting another clip he emailed me.

This one has footage of a recently deceased surfer called 'Buttons'.

At about 90 seconds, it's a very short clip. But, look closely and you'll observe super smooth style, solid tube riding, a fun attitude and impressive 360s on the face that I didn't know were even being done back then...

Deported

Well, I never made it into the US - I was deported upon arrival. Long story for another day. So, my trip ended up being a round one that took 54 hours door to door.

Yawn.

Returning to South Australia, I found an email in my inbox from one of my long-time surfing friends: Chris.

I'm posting the clip that was within that very email. It's a fun clip with chirpy music, nice scenery and a thick slab.

Enjoy the footage...

As I continue to travel back home to the west coast of the US, I thought I'd post you some photos of the kind of surf the east coast can produce.

A blast from the past

Having recently come back from an unsuccessful surf trip to Yorkes, Dad got a bit sentimental and went back into the family photo album.

There he found photos of our first ever trip to Yorkes in 1993, and of one of the first three waves I ever got to my feet on.

These photos were taken at Pondalowie Bay on the eastern side of Innes National Park.

This first photo is of me and my younger bro getting some tips from one of our instructors.

Photo: Andrew

This photo is of me heading into the water to have a crack.

I was excited because it was pitting that day. Not!

Photo: Andrew

And this last photo is a rare one of me getting to my feet. We were on a three or four day surf camp, and over that whole period I only got to my feet three times.

This camp was the first time I was ever on a surfboard.

Ahhh... the memories.

Hello India

India: the home of cricket, spices, Indians and... surfing!?

India satellite photo

I didn't now much about surfing in India. I now know a little bit more after watching the clip on today's post.

It's a beautiful clip with the interviewed local surfers so eloquently describing their love of surfing. I'm shore many of us can relate to their feelings.

I know it's a Quiksilver promotion - no doubt they see the business potential of penetrating a market of one billion people. But please, try to look past that on this occasion.

The last day and the end of an era

So my surf trip ended today.

The conditions were so plappy that we didn't even check the surf. We just went home.

Source: www.traveloznow.com.au/details?listing=745

Today's post isn't about that though, it's about a Yorkes establishment that's been around long before I started going there in '93: Rhino's Tavern.

As you can see from the headline below, Rhino's Tavern is now closed and scheduled for demolition.

Photo: Willy

I can be sentimental at times. And this is a sad time.

Rhino's, while no oil painting, was a warm place where camping surfers would often pop in to buy provisions (at the attached store), or stay in the evening for a meal and/or a drink.

The meals, while simplish, were always hearty and the service was personal. There was no fakeness, no pretencion, and I loved it that way.

Rhino's Tavern satellite photo

Source: Google Maps

Surfing photos and paintings adorned the walls and many of the staff were recognised local surfers. You could relate to them and they could relate to you.

Now Rhino's is no more. It succumb to the newer, more modern and more professional (and more cold) Marion Bay Tavern just down the road. And I suspect most are okay with that. After all, who doesn't like progress?

But I for one will miss Rhinos, and will to this day prefer going there for a meal post surf.

In the water finally and the caravan park that was

So, on the third and last full day of my surf trip with Dad, I finally got into the water.

It wasn't great, but I'm glad I did it. One hour of fun and a couple of turns.

Photo: Willy

What has been a disappointment this trip, is the state of Marion Bay Caravan Park - a place me, my dad, my brother and friends have been coming to since 1993.

Link to Marion Bay Caravan Park site

It has been an establishment on many of my Yorkes surf trips.

Marion Bay Caravan Park satellite photo

Source: Google Maps

Over this period, we've seen the park's managers come and go. With them, over time, so has the care factor.

What was once a lush, bushy, pretty and proud place, it has now become something I don't rave about. It's bare, dirty and plain.

If you ever come down, make your trip for the surf, not the caravan park - otherwise you'll be disappointed.

Another sameish way to make home made surf wax

Following my post of Saturday 7 December 2013, where I showed you how to make homemade surf wax, I got some positive feedback and expressions of interest in trying to make it.

Link to post of Saturday 7 December 2013

So, with the fear of overkill, I'm attaching another clip of how to make surf wax at home. Hopefully this different perspective of doing essentially the same thing will help guide those with queries.

Hope this helps and good luck with your brewing!

The second day of my surf trip is not much better than the first...

So this holiday, based in Marion Bay, isn't at all going well surf-wise.

This is what the surf check looked like this morning.

Again, don't be fooled by the apparent face on this wave - I waited a long time to take this photo.

The afternoon surf check looked like this.

Again, don't be fooled by the shape on this wave - it is the result of patience.

Photo: Willy

The best wave I found all day was this four inch peeler. You may be able to see it if you squint!

So, apart from hanging with my dad, these emus were the day's highlight.

Grumble grumble.

'Photos' and 'Videos' tabs are launching soon

Cuttie in Your Face is evolving (hopefully for the best)!

Over the next few months I'll be phasing out the tabs (and labels) called:
- Online photos
- Reader photos
- Online clips
- Reader clips.
You can already see these in the orange bar across the top of this blog.

These will be substituted for the tabs (and labels):
- Photos
- Videos.
You can also already see these in the orange bar across the top of this blog.

I feel a consolidation of these tabs will make the blog easier to read and follow as, where possible, I'm a fan of simplicity.

Why will this take a few months? Unfortunately there is a fair bit of work to be done behind the scenes. I will have to go through the archives and re-label all 380 posts or so. Just to name one task in this process...

Thanks for your patience and support.

Surf trip starting off pear-shaped

Well, my trip to Yorkes with my dad is looking to turn out like my last one - the worst ever!

South westerly winds look like they are going to buffet us for the four days we'll be here.

Yorke Peninsula satellite photo

Source: maps.google.com/maps?hl=en-GB&tab=ml

We've just rocked up and there's nothing for me to surf.

I've attached a photo of Spits - the only place that can handle this wind. Don't be fooled by the photo though - I had to wait a while to take it. In reality it was a long time between sets and the waves were pretty fat after the takeoff.

Booooo.

Here's hoping

I'm heading off on a surf trip today.

To share with you my dreams, hopes and expectations for the trip, I thought picture would be the best medium.
