Tell the teacher we're surfin'... Surfin' USA (Beach Boys)

Today's link and photo go out to all the young American surfers out there who are looking to find a college that is conducive for surfing.

Cruising the net I found this funny site that rates various American colleges in terms of their appeal to surfing students! Here, they don't really delve into academia, rather the opportunity to get out for some quality waves between lectures:

The below photo is a sample of the classes this site peddles.

... And I give this slab an A+

Crafty

The craftsmen and women out there should love this link!

It's a short clip on some guys who, after going for a bit of a surf, find some scrap wood, go home, and make a brand new stick out of it.

Project board

The project looks fun and the board that comes out of it looks to have some real character.

To me, the result is the kind of board you'd want to keep for your whole life - either for riding, or for putting up on the wall.

I've never been really interested in board making to the extent that I want to take it up myself, but now I kind of want to have a go.

Summer's long gone in the southern hemisphere.

Photo's like this remind me of those lovely warm days past (and coming).

South American slabbage

A friend of mine, and reader of Cuttie in your face, Chris, emailed me the other day with a link to a wave that got him frothing.

Chile, a seemingly always cold surfing destination in South America, often comes up with remote gems. The photo on this link is of no exception...

Thanks for the photo/link Chris and keep them coming!

Patagonia wetsuit review

So, I tried my new winter steamer on Sunday - first new wetsuit I've had in ages.

Just like I promised myself, I got myself a Patagonia wetsuit - for many reasons...

The following is a brief and unpaid review:

Source: www.potomacriverkeeper.org

Patagonia is an American company that makes top-end adventure clothing and equipment with a focus on minimising their impact on the environment. I now own a few Patagonia pieces and continue to be impressed with the thought they put into their products and their attention to detail. These are all qualities that make me confident when buying premium quality products.

Patagonia link

My steamer is the R3 with neck entry. I understand they also do a rear zipper model, but after owning one of the first Billabong neck entry wetsuits over a decade ago, I was keen to get back to that design.

The R3 isn't even Patagonia's warmest model - they do an R4 for genuinely frigid waters.

Men's R3 steamer link

The R3 is a simple looking suit. But don't let that deter you - simplicity doesn't mean a lack of functionality. Patagonia have gone away from using smoothie neoprene because of its vulnerability to easily getting cut and the fact that it is more perishable than other types of neoprene. Patagonia also don't do much welding or gluing and taping of seams - instead opting for more traditional gluing and stitching.

I can report the wetsuit, while heavy (as should be expected with a winter suit), is still very comfortable and flexible. And most importantly, it is toasty warm! While my head seemed frozen for much of Sunday's surf, my body was snug. Probably too snug - the pee I did inside early during the session took way too long to escape...

Source: www.wetsuitreport.com

So yes, I love my new Patagonia R3 steamer and continue to be impressed with the brand. I would recommend this suit to anybody who appreciates high quality, high performance, and an environmental conscience factored into the design, manufacturing and marketing processes.

The season has started

There are a number of well recognised islands in the Pacific with some truly glorious waves. Say hello to Fiji's Cloudbreak.

Beauty in badness

Teahupoo, possibly the world's most recognised heavy wave, is usually appreciated for its spectacular power.

This time, in today's post, I'm appreciating it for its beauty.

Cast in the right light, with the right winds, a very solid day can look soft and graceful... almost approachable even.

Sauciness in the Philippines

The Philippines have for a long time been a recognised surfing destination. But it still seems there are nuggetty jems to be found.

Philippines satellite photo

Even though this footage is somewhat dated now, this was, if it still isn't, a secret spot of sorts.

Click 'Play' and watch this puppy reel! A perfect right hander - Cape St Francis style (From the Bruce Brown movie The Endless Summer) - long, fast and hollow over smooth, smooth sand.

Just another spot to add to my surfing life's 'To do' list...

Latin American peacefulness

From my experiences, Latin American consistently serves up the idyllic surfing lifestyle. Sure, there are a few commercial spots. And sure, these are unfortunately increasing in number due to the business these third world economies are trying to attract. But generally speaking, great, idyllic surf and lifestyle can be found there.

This is one such example I found on YouTube:

Deeper than deep

There are deep barrels and there are impossible barrels.

The few barrels showcased on this clip are easily the later. One of them I even wrongly thought was a close out.

A friendly hint: get your torch ready to watch these deep caves...

Finally discovered: Willy's perfect wave!

I know I've given hints in the past as to what types of waves I like. The odd piccy or clip has tickled me with some or many of it's elements.

I've never however, found my perfect wave - until now.

I was browsing the next, looking for my next CIYF instalment, when this gem popped up on my screen. This is finally it! My search is over... Well, not quite over - I have to figure out where this spot is and  how to get there now.

So, please enjoy my perfect wave:

Willy's dream

What do you think? Turquoise, sunny, light off-shore breeze, easy paddle in, hollow and makeable - those are some of the reasons why I love what I see...

Home made quality

Surfline has recently published a bunch of amateur surfing photographs.

Surfline link

To me, what the feature in the below link shows, is that regular everyday surfers like you and me (no offence) can score fun, epic, and perfect surf. No big budgets required (of course that helps though)...

The only difference between me and these photographers is, that I'd be in the water surfing instead of on the shore photographing!

A bit more remote Bali

Bali, Indonesia does have some more remote pockets where you can get away from the crowds, and today's clip gives a snippet of that.

Bali, Indonesia satellite photo

This clip, while not of remote remote Bali, is of a spot that, while under many people's noses, is not as widely surfed as Pedang Pedang or Uluwatu for example.

A more light-hearded look at Indonesia's island of Bali

I've been to Bali a couple of times and it's been good. The water is warm and the surf pumps!

Bali, Indonesia satellite photo

As good as this sounds, the place can be a bit of an overwhelming zoo too with mass development, 'keen' vendors, noisy and smelly traffic, crowds in the water and pollution.

So when this clip popped up, I found it showed a different surfer's perspective of Bali. It shows fun and mellow waves, emptyish lineups, great views and relaxation.

I admit this is very far from being the best clip I've posted on 'Cuttie in your face', but I thought it may be good to show as it highlights the many other dimensions of the surfing lifestyle many of us enjoy...

Go surfing... in style

This link is a little different to what I usually post - but it's still very relevant to surfing.

It's a little arty, but that's cool - right?

This one goes out to all of you who dream of being the proud owners of a sweet surf mobile one day:

A little slice of heaven

What an island to be swept up on!

Yes, there is a blatantly obvious left hander running along the side. But have you noticed the white wash line in the bottom of the pic wrapping around the other side of the island?! It seems to show a juicy right hander just ran along that side one or two waves before.

Something for everybody...

It doesn't need to be 10/10 to have fun

I'm somewhat new to checking surf reports before going surfing. This newish habit has proven to have its positives and its negatives.

On the positive side, I've never scored so frequently in my life! I've been able to hit tides and swells while missing wind changes - for example.

On the negative side, I've become way too picky. For example, I tend not to go down when the wind is even a light on-shore. This is not good. Some great surfs can be had in 'imperfect' conditions. For example, I've had many a fun surf on beach breaks where imperfections in waves have made for some really intense shapes.

This photo, while not perfectly portraying what I'm trying to describe, is meant to support my thoughts of fun being there to be had in sub world-class conditions...

Black and white

G'day!

Today's clip comes from way back: the black and white TV days.

It shows some classic Cali footage of the ever popular Malibu Beach, and some pumping beachy!

Yeah Yeah John John

John John Florence, a Hawaiian ripper, has many a clip dedicated to him.

This is one such clip.

To start on a negative, I'm personally sick of seeing the plethora of reverse 360 airs on surfing clips nowadays. Yes, it is skillful. Yes, only a select few can do them. But no, they aren't great to watch aaaaaaaaaaall the time.

Having said this, to give him credit, John John's reverse 360 airs in this clip are spectacular! The amount of times he makes the full rotation before landing is genuinely impressive.

Aside from that, look out for his big turns, big barrels, and the double barrel he gets Go Pro footage of at the end! I doubt you've ever been so intimate with another surfer in the pit...

Yeow!

Worth a cheer

This clip excites me while it bums me out.

I've been to Desert Point before - twice! Each time chasing perfect waves similar to the one I'm showing you today. Neither time did I find anything close to resembling this.

So, while I watch this guy get shacked off his tree, I sigh deeply...

Shoulda stayed home...

This guy looks funnily unimpressed with what he's seeing in front of him.

I can imagine him, with that body language, scratching his head thinking to himself that he should have stayed home in bed.

I imagine more normal people would be deliriously sprinting up the beach dropping things behind them in a mad frenzy!

Secluded dreams

When I think about surfing with those close to me, and how I'd like the session to be, I rarely think about world class waves. Instead, I think about an intimate session on a fun, playful wave such as this.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw this photo with two guys out in this beautiful location was: 'Damn! I'd love to share this with my mates!'

Until that moment, I'll just have to settle for crowded close-outs...

It's a secret!

A reader forwarded me this link, raving about the (secret) barrels it had to show.

It is indeed juicy (and secret)!

Watch it closely, and you'll notice it's a very intense wave. If, at the end of the clip, you still don't think it's intense, read the blurb underneath it and see what you think...
